Roller shutter door FAQs
Answers to the questions we hear most about roller door prices, measuring, materials, motors and repairs.
How much does a roller shutter door cost?
Price depends on the size of the opening, the material (galvanised, colour-coated or aluminium), whether the door is manual, chain-operated or motorised, and the site conditions. Send us the width and height of the opening (or a photo) on WhatsApp at 082 617 0987 and we'll give you a quote.
Do you cover my area?
We work across Gauteng: Johannesburg, Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Soweto, Midrand, Pretoria, Centurion, the East Rand (Kempton Park, Edenvale, Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni, Springs, Brakpan, Alberton), the West Rand and the Vaal.
How do I measure for a roller door?
Measure the width of the opening between the walls and the height from the floor to the underside of the lintel or ceiling. Also note the space above the opening and on each side. A photo helps. We always confirm measurements on site before manufacturing.
How long does installation take?
Most residential and shop doors are installed in a few hours once the door has been made. Large industrial doors and multi-unit projects take longer; we'll give you a timeline with your quote.
Can you motorise an existing roller door?
Usually yes. If the curtain, barrel and guides are in good condition we retrofit a motor, remotes and a manual override.
Do you repair roller doors you didn't install?
Yes. We repair all makes of roller shutters and roller doors: stuck doors, springs, slats, guides, chains, locks and motors.
What's the difference between a roller shutter and a roller door?
They are the same thing. 'Roller shutter' is often used for shopfronts and windows, 'roller door' for garages and warehouses. Both are a curtain of interlocking slats that rolls up into a drum above the opening.
Which material should I choose?
Galvanised steel is the strongest, most affordable all-rounder. Colour-coated steel adds a matching finish. Aluminium is lighter, quieter and won't rust. Perforated shutters and grilles let you see through when closed.
Will my roller door work during a power outage?
Yes. Manual and chain-operated doors don't need power, and every motor we fit has a manual override. Battery backup is available so motorised doors keep working on the remote.
Do you quote for large projects and developments?
Yes. We quote for contractors, developers and landlords on retail centres, industrial parks and storage units, matching doors across every unit.
Will a roller door fit my garage?
Most likely. A roller door needs a small amount of headroom above the opening for the drum, usually much less than a sectional or tip-up door needs. We measure on site and confirm before quoting.
Can you install after trading hours?
Yes. For shops and centres that cannot close during the day we can schedule installation early in the morning, after hours or over a weekend.
How big can an industrial roller door be?
Roller doors are made to measure, so they can cover very wide and tall openings. Large doors use heavier slats, bigger barrels and chain-gear or motor operation. Send us your opening size and we'll specify the right door.
My roller door is too heavy to lift. What's wrong?
Usually the springs inside the barrel have lost tension or broken. Spring re-tensioning or replacement makes the door light and safe to lift again. Spring work is dangerous, so please don't try it yourself.
Can any roller door be motorised?
Most can, provided the curtain, barrel and guides are in good condition. We check the door first and tell you if anything needs fixing before the motor goes on.
How often should a roller door be serviced?
For homes, once a year is usually enough. Shopfronts and industrial doors that cycle many times a day benefit from a service every 6 months.
